Holden Village is a small, intentional community located above the west shore of Lake Chelan, accessible only by boat via Lucerne and a single gravel road into the mountains. Originally a copper mining town, Holden has since been repurposed into a retreat and learning center rooted in communal living, shared work, and seasonal programming. While often grouped with Stehekin due to its remoteness, Holden Village functions very differently from a traditional town.
The village operates on a seasonal rhythm, hosting residents, staff, volunteers, and guests who participate in daily community life, educational programs, and shared meals. Holden Village is not a commercial destination and does not function as a general‑access community; visits are structured and typically planned well in advance. Its presence adds a unique cultural and historical layer to the Upper Lake Chelan Valley, shaped by its past, its purpose, and its setting deep in the North Cascades.
