Recreation in the Lake Chelan Valley

The Lake Chelan Valley supports year-round outdoor recreation centered on Lake Chelan, the surrounding mountains, and the valley’s working landscape. Activities range from on-water sports and hiking in summer to Nordic skiing and snowshoeing in winter. The valley’s four distinct seasons mean there is rarely a month when the outdoors is off the table.

On the Water

Lake Chelan is 50 miles long, glacier-carved, and clear. It is the primary setting for water-based recreation in the valley from late spring through early fall.

  • Boating — Boat rentals and marina facilities are available in both Chelan and Manson. Lakeshore Marina in Chelan offers slips, a boat launch, and watercraft rentals.
  • Swimming — Public swimming beaches are located at Don Morse Park and Lakeside Park in Chelan. Both parks offer protected swim areas and are most active from June through September.
  • Stand-Up Paddleboarding and Kayaking — Rental equipment is available from operators at multiple lake access points in Chelan and Manson.
  • Jet Skiing — Personal watercraft rentals are available seasonally from operators with locations in Chelan and Manson bays.
  • Fishing — Lake Chelan supports freshwater fishing throughout the warmer months. The lake’s depth and glacial clarity attract anglers throughout the region.

The Lake Chelan Boat Company operates scheduled passenger ferry service from Chelan to Stehekin at the far end of the lake. The route covers more than 50 miles and passes remote shorelines, wilderness terrain, and communities not accessible by road.

Day trips and one-way passages are available. This is one of the most distinctive sightseeing and travel experiences in the valley, and is also the primary means of access to the upper lake.

Water Park — Slidewaters

Slidewaters is a waterslide park located in Chelan that operates seasonally during the summer months. It is a popular destination for families and a well-known fixture in the valley’s summer recreation scene.

Hiking and Trails

The valley offers hiking at multiple scales and difficulty levels. Trails near the City of Chelan follow the Riverwalk and climb into the surrounding hillsides with views of the lake and valley. The upper lake and Stehekin area provide access to backcountry trails within the North Cascades National Park Complex.

Trail conditions and access vary significantly by elevation and season. Lower-valley trails are accessible for much of the year, while high-elevation and upper-lake routes are typically open from late spring through early fall.

Cycling and Biking

Paved and unpaved biking routes run through the lower valley, with options ranging from flat lakeside paths to hillside terrain above Chelan and Manson. The valley’s roads and back routes also attract road cyclists, particularly in spring and fall when traffic is lighter.

Golf

The Lake Chelan Golf Course is an 18-hole municipal course operated by the City of Chelan. Established in 1964, it sits above the city with views of the lake and the Cascade Mountains. A pro shop and club rentals are available on site. The course operates seasonally, generally from spring through fall.

Wine Tasting

The Lake Chelan Valley is home to a significant concentration of wineries and tasting rooms, with the highest density located on the north shore near Manson. Wine tasting is available in both the city of Chelan and Manson, and operates year-round at many locations, though hours are typically reduced outside of summer and the fall harvest season.

Winter Recreation

Winter recreation in the Lake Chelan Valley is centered in the hills above the lower valley, where snowfall supports Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

  • Lake Chelan Nordic Club — Operates groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails during winter months.
  • Echo Valley Ski Area — A downhill ski area located on Cooper Mountain Road, approximately 15 minutes from downtown Chelan or Manson. Suited to families and beginner to intermediate skiers.
  • Snowmobiling — Available in the backcountry terrain above the valley during winter months.

Year-Round Recreation

Several activities are available across all four seasons:

  • Wine tasting at valley wineries and tasting rooms
  • Hiking at lower elevations
  • Golf (spring through fall)
  • Walking and cycling on valley paths and roads
  • Lake access for those prepared for cooler water and weather

The valley sees noticeably higher recreation activity from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Shoulder seasons — particularly April through May and September through October — offer similar access with smaller crowds.
